People all over the world celebrate the coming of a New Year, but they celebrate on different days and in different ways.

TASK: Tell me about a country who celebrates the New Year a different way to here in Australia.
Try and choose a different country to everyone else :)

  1. Copacabana Beach In Rio De Janeiro. They all dress in white for the beach. Lots of people throw white flowers into the sea, this is for luck and fortune, at midnight there is fire works and the party goes until the next day.

  2. Korean New Year's Day
    Koreans eat a bowl of rice cake soup because they believe it will add an extra year to their life. One of their favourite games is see-sawing on a large see-saw setup in a courtyard or in the park. The first day of the Lunar New Year is called Sol-Nal. It's for families to renew ties and prepare for the New Year.

  3. They celebrate New Year in Denmark by throwing dishes they have collected all year at the front door on New Years Eve. They believe that the more broken plates the more friends they should have in the New Year.

  4. CAMBODIA
    Cambodian New Year ,or Chaul Chnam Thmey, means "Enter New Year", is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the New Year. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year's Day, which usually falls on April 13 or 14th, which is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their hardwork before the rainy season begins. Cambodians prepare special dishes. One of these is a "kralan": a cake made from steamed rice mixed with beans or peas, grated coconut and coconut milk. The mixture is stuffed inside a bamboo stick and slowly roasted

  5. China.
    The Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year or "yuan tan" between January 21st and February 20th. The exact day is determined by the New Moon which starts the new month. Their celebrations last for 9 days. It is a time to be "out with the old and in with the new".

    Japan
    In Japan on New Years Eve you eat buckwheat noodles called "toshikoshisoba" it means "year-crossing noodles" They also listen for the sound of bells being rung 108 times because they believe it purifies people from the sins of evil. On New Year's Day everybody wears brand new clothes. They also decorate their houses with pine branches and bamboo.

  7. Thailand New Year
    Thai New Year is called Songkran.
    It lasts for 3 days from the 13th to 15th of April.
    People throw water over each other. They believe this will bring rain.
    They play a game called Saba which is like skittles.
    People release their fish from their bowl or their birds from their cages to bring good luck.

  8. Scotland call the coming new year Hogmanay New Year's Celebrations,is celebrated by having Fireworks and Music Concerts in Edinburgh, Scotland. They have a parade of people dressed as vikings, holding torches and they play the bagpipes during the celebrations. The Scottish like to sing so there is lots of singing and dancing.

  9. Ireland celebrates new years on the thirty-first of October.
    It is know as Samhian.
    They celebrate Samhian by eating loots of food and nailing bread or cake to the door to keep evil spirits from coming in there homes.
    They also put bonfires on the top of there driveways.
    The single girls put springs of mistletoe and holly and ivy leaves under there pillows so they dream about there fruition husband.

  10. Mexico
    Mexicans celebrate New Years on the 1st of January. They eat a grape with each of the 12 chimes of a clock's bell during the midnight countdown while making a wish with each grape.

  11. Italy.
    They celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 in the Gregorion calendar.
    They celebrate by having a special dinner of white risotto, lentils, cotechino and raisins this meal is for good luck, wealth and fortune.
    Most places are closed on New Year's Day and they have fireworks on New Year's Eve.
    Symbolic traditions are throwing pots pans and clothes out of Windows to let go of the past, wearing red underpants for good luck and having a Cristmas fire before New Year's Day to turn away evil spirits and to invite the Virgin Mary into warm newborn Jesus.

    Canada
    They celebrate the new year coming in by having parties at friends places or in bars on December 31 and some people party into the early morning of January 1. In Quebec some people spend the night ice fishing with friends. An important symbol is fireworks that mark the beginning of a new year.

    America new years day is on the 21st of march and people do special dances. They also stay up and swim at night.

    In New York city in America they celebrate new years eve by having a ball drop. They gather in the middle of the city.

    New Years Day is on January 1st and is also called St Basils Day.
    Instead of getting gifs on Christmas they get gifs on New Years Day.
    They eat St Basils cake and it has a gold or silver coin in it and eat something called Vassilopitta.

    The Jewish new year festival is called Rosh Hashanah the date changes every year because they have their own calendar. It is a 10 day event starting in July the seventh month. They send each other cards with the message " may you be written down for a good year ".They fast at the end for 24 hours.

    In Greece the children would leave their shoes by the fireplace on New Years Day hoping that Saint Basil, who was famous for his kindness, would fill their shoes with gifts.
